Community Garden

We have started work on an exciting project creating a Community Garden. The Garden is adjacent to the College, in the Patcham Peace Gardens. The garden will be a place to learn, share and grow with our community.

Goal

The goal is to build and maintain an accessible community garden, creating connection with our local area and community groups while enhancing curriculum, wellbeing and employability opportunities for all our learners.

Progress: Step 1 - Centenary Orchard

In January 2024 with Patcham Memorial Hall, Brighton Permaculture Trust, Patcham Village Pre-School, Downs View Link College and volunteers we planted an Orchard in the Garden to celebrate the 100th Birthday of Patcham Memorial Hall.

All of our learners, students at the Link and some Alumni came to dig, plant and mulch. Our friends at Sussex Surplus kept us going with delicious soup and drinks. Twelve fruit trees were planted and are doing well.

Progress: Step 2 - Raised Beds & Hedgerow

In June 2024, volunteers and learners got together to

  • Plant a hedgerow

  • Care for the saplings planted in January

  • Build a compost zone

  • Start the raised bed build - by moving over 200 sleepers!

Learners prepared for the day by making ice cream and finding out about the garden. Everyone got stuck in resulting in fantastic progress and a real sense of community.

Summer 24

Amazing progress over summer with 1 bed completed and rehoming all of the tomatoes, strawberry's, salads and marigolds from the College. It was heartwarming to see all the watering and some good use of mint in the Ladies Mile drinks!
